About VoIP / Internet
Phones
VoIP is a new way make phone calls. VoIP
stands for Voice over Internet Protocol and is the technical
term for “Internet phone service.” VoIP takes regular
phone calls and zaps them through your high-speed web
connection. VoIP uses regular phones, even cordless
phones.
Simply plug a VoIP
adapter into your cable/DSL modem line and
then plug your phone into the adapter. Your computer does not
need to stay on for voip services, the VoIP adapter plugs
into your broadband modem and works even if your PC is off. Voice over IP (voip) is one of the telecommunication industry's fastest growing markets. By 2010, VoIP subscribers are expected to more than quadruple, jumping from 10.3 million to at least 44 million.
Another common term used is Internet Phone Service. This is
a more generic term for using the Internet to make calls. Internet
Phone Service calls include VoIP as detailed above but also includes
PC based calls. PC based calls use software and PC headsets
(or speaker and mic) to initiate the call to other computers
and sometimes traditional phones.
VoIP phone service providers combine domestic
US local and long distance calls for one low monthly rate with
unlimited local and long distance, plus features like Caller
ID, Call Waiting, Voicemail, Call Forwarding, Call Conferencing,
and many more - free of charge. Free calls between users on the
same service is also normally included. For an overview see our
VoIP service comparison
table.

MagicJack - MagicJack changes the game with a flat-rate price so low it looks like a misprint: $20 per year -- not per month, per year -- for unlimited calls to the United States and Canada from anywhere in the world. Getting started costs $40, which includes the first year of service and a small device that plugs into a USB port. The device has a telephone jack that lets you use a standard phone, including cordless ones (you also can opt to use a headphone).
Setup is simple. You don't need to insert a CD; just plug the small device into the USB port and the software loads automatically. We were making calls less than five minutes after plugging in the device. Voice quality was indistinguishable from a wired phone line.
